(Adds details, background)LONDON (AFX) - BP PLC has assured it will carry out the recommendations of the Baker panel that found 'material deficiencies' at its refinery operations in the US that led to the fatal explosion in 2005.'BP will implement the recommendations made by an independent safety review panel as part of the company's continuing effort to improve its safety culture and to strengthen and standardize process safety management at BP's five US refineries,' the group said in a statement.Lord Browne, the oil giant's outgoing chief executive, said the panel's recommendations were consistent with the findings of the group's own internal reviews.'As a result, we have been in action on many of their recommendations for a year or more. Our progress has been encouraging but there is much more to do,' he said.BP has already taken a number of actions to improve safety at the refineries and will, after 'a more thorough review, develop plans for additional action', he added.BP's oil refining team will be meeting with the panel within the week to address how best to implement these recommendations, he said. The panel, led by former US Secretary of State James Baker, was formed by BP in October 2005 on the recommendation of the US Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board. The refinery blast in March 2005 left 15 people dead and a hundred others injured.BP has paid over 1 bln usd to settle over a thousand claims arising from the incident.monicca.egoy@thomson.commbe/roCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2006.
