SANTA ANA, Calif. (AFX) - Eye care products maker Advanced Medical Optics Inc. said Tuesday it acquired WaveFront Sciences Inc., a provider of proprietary wavefront diagnostic systems for refractive surgery and medical research.Advanced Medical paid $14 million in cash upfront for the private company and agreed to pay up to $6 million in contingent payments over the next three years.WaveFront makes aberrometers, devices which precisely measures the total refractive error and wavefront aberrations of the human eye as part of the wavefront-guided custom laser vision correction procedure. The Albuquerque, N.M., company employs about 50 people.Advanced Medical shares rose 27 cents to $36.36 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
