China commercial banks end-March NPLs ratio 6.63 pct - UPDATE |

BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - The average non-performing loans (NPLs) ratio of Chinese commercial banks stood at 6.63 pct at end-March, the banking regulator said.The China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) said in a statement on its website that the banks' NPLs totaled 1.25 trln yuan at the end of the quarter.It noted that the NPLs total at the end of 2006 was 1.17 trln yuan but this figure does not include the soured loans of city commercial banks, rural commercial banks, and foreign banks. These loans have only been included in the CBRC's calculations starting this quarter.Previously it only included the NPLs of state-owned commercial banks and twelve national joint stock commercial banks.The CBRC said the average NPLs ratio of the big five state-owned banks was 8.20 pct at the end of the first quarter, and 2.78 pct for joint stock banks.City commercial banks had an average NPLs ratio of 4.52 pct, with 5.32 pct for rural commercial banks.
