LONDON: British music company EMI Group Plc. has quashed rumours that Coldplay, one of its biggest acts, is splitting up. The company, in a statement, said the band is not quitting. "They are on the road until July, when their 16-month X&Y World Tour ends in Japan. They will then continue working on new material."
The band may take a break after the tour before working on new ideas, EMI clarified.
The rumours about the split sprang up after Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin reportedly told the annual Brits music awards ceremony that it would be a 'few years' before he attended a similar industry event. "People are fed up with us -- and so are we," he was reported as having said at the ceremony.
The band, which won awards for best single and best album at the Brits ceremony, has been one of EMI's most profitable bands since winning their first contract in 1999.
The band had caused a major fall in the company's stocks early last year following a delay in the release of its third album X&Y beyond the financial closure of the company. The album, which was released in June, became a big hit topping the Billboard album chart in the U.S. and other charts around the world. Subsequently, Martin himself created a controversy when he described the company's shareholders as 'the greatest evil of this modern world'.
EMI's shares fell 8 pence, or 3.2 per cent, to 245 pence, before closing at 249.5 pence in London after the company came out with the clarification.
