LONDON - The latest jobless data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that the number of unemployed people has risen to a four-year high.
Between January to March the number of jobless in the country increased to 1.59 million. This was a jump of 44,000 in the three-month period and 177,000 over the 12-month period. Consequently the jobless rate increased to 5.2 percent up from the 5.1 percent in the previous three months. Also ONS said that the number of people on jobless benefit rose 7,700 to 945,500. The increase in April means that the jobless rate has been rising for 13 of the last 14 months.
This is the longest period of increase in unemployment rate since 1992. The ONS also reported that the number of manufacturing jobs is at the lowest rate since records began in 1978. There was a reduction of 117,000, or 3.7 percent jobs, to 3.6 million. This news follows the one on the proposed 1,000 job losses by GM at Ellesmere Port in the Vauxhall factory.
However the overall employment rate hit the highest level since July-September 2005 and was pegged at 74.7 percent with 28.9 million people in work. These two indexes can make parallel movements if people who were previously not seeking work start to look for it.
Average earnings in the three months to March rose 4.2 percent. The Bank of England will keep a close watch on this index since any pay-rise above 4.5 percent can be inflationary.
