HELSINKI (Thomson Financial) - Nokia said it has filed a complaint with the US International Trade Commission, alleging that Qualcomm is engaging in unfair business practices and copying the Finnish group's patented technology without permission in some of the chipsets it makes.Nokia is calling on the ITC to launch an investigation and issue an order preventing imports into the US of Qualcomm chipsets that it believes infringe five patents in its CDMA and WCDMA/GSM chipsets. It is pressing for an import ban also on handsets that contain such chipsets.'There is significant evidence to warrant an ITC investigation into Qualcomm's business conduct,' said Nokia CFO Rick Simonson. The complaint is the latest development in a lengthy legal wrangle between the two technology giants and is linked to patents in technologies that increase handset battery life, enable smaller handset design and reduce manufacturing costs.'These technologies are important to Nokia's success as they allow its products to have competitive advantages over those of competitors,' the company said.james.etheridge@thomson.comje/ejpCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
