ZURICH (Thomson Financial) - BioXell SpA said it is starting a phase IIa clinical trial that will investigate if its Elocalcitol drug can improve sperm quality in infertile male patients.Data for the trial is expected in the second half of next year.At the same time next year, BioXell is also expecting results from its European phase IIb trial for the same drug for use in patients with overactive bladder. The Italian drug firm, which is a spin-out from Roche Holdings AG, said it plans to highlight these projects during its R&D day held later today. The company said it will also provide further data from its phase IIb trial showing that Elocalcitol is effective in slowing prostate growth and alleviating adverse urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).Meanwhile, it said that BXL746 has been shown in pre-clinical trials to be highly effective against post-surgical adhesions or scar tissue that binds tissues that should not normally be joined.Phase IIa trial on BXL746 starts in the second half next year.In addition, it said that initial studies of MNAC13 shows that it is effective in reducing pain and that clinical studies are planned for late 2009.huimin.neo@thomson.comhmn/lamCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
