LA JOLLA, Calif. (AP) - Biopharmaceutical company Metabasis Therapeutics Inc. said Monday its drug candidate for a type of liver cancer met its primary goals in an early-to-mid stage study.The drug candidate, MB07133, is aimed at treating unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. The primary goals of the Phase I/II clinical trial included determining the maximum tolerated dose, safety profile, pharmacokinetics and anti-tumor activity.The doses were found to be well-tolerated by patients and drug was successful in reaching its target, specifically the liver, the company said. The drug also are vealed encouraging signs of drug activity,' according to the company.Shares of Metabasis rose 20 cents, or 2.4 percent, to close at $8.50 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
