(updates to add other facilities to produce Astra model)BRUSSELS (Thomson Financial) - General Motors Corp will continue operating all five of its European factories rather than shutting down at least one of the facilities to reduce costs, the European works council said. The next generation of the Opel Astra model will be produced at the plants in Bochum, Germany; Gliwice, Poland; Ellesmere Port in the UK; and in the Swedish town of Trollhaettan from 2010, securing the future of the facilities, works council head Klaus Franz told dpa news agency. The company's fifth European factory, in Antwerp, Belgium, will make other GM models. The works council and General Motors Europe's management will work out details of the agreement by the end of the year.GM Europe has cut around 12,000 jobs since 2005 as part of efforts to make regional operations profitable again.maria.sheahan@thomson.comdpa/mas/jsa/mas/ambCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
