WOLFSBURG, Germany (Thomson Financial) - Volkswagen AG said it sold 1.47 mln cars worldwide in the first quarter, up 7.9 pct from the same period last year, with the dent in its home market in Germany offset by a sales leap in central and eastern Europe.Europe's biggest carmaker said the increase in value-added taxes (VAT) in Germany from January 1 resulted in a 4.9 pct drop in sales at 235,000 units but deliveries in central and eastern Europe posted a 25.9 pct growth to 109,000 units. In western Europe, deliveries rose 1.9 pct to 777,000 units while in China, they were up 23 pct at 203,000.marilyn.gerlach@thomson.commog/jlcCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
