MILAN (AFX) - Alitalia SpA unions are likely to call off a strike scheduled Friday after the government said it is ready to meet them on Feb 1 to discuss the privatisation of the ailing airline, the daily Il Sole 24 Ore said citing union sources.

Claudio Genovesi, leader of the FIT-CISL union, said 'all the conditions are met to suspend the strike'.

He added that he is ready to call off the strike once the union has received an official summon to meet the government.

Meanwhile, Mauro Rossi, head of the FILT-CGIL, said a decision will only be taken after having read the government's letter.

Unions have asked to obtain more involvement in the airline's privatisation process.

The government, which has a 49.9 pct stake in the airline, has asked private investors to present bids for the airline by a Jan 29.
