LONDON (AFX) - Russia will ask Britain to conduct further investigation into the death of Yuri Golubev, one of the founders of the former Russian oil empire Yukos, in London, the Itar-Tass news agency reported, quoting Yuri Chaika, Russia's prosecutor-general.Golubev, 65, a close friend of the jailed Russian billionaire Mikhail Khodorkovsky, was found dead in his London apartment last week. London police ruled out foul play.Russian daily MosNews, quoting an unnamed official at the prosecutor-general's office, said Russia is preparing a are quest to Britain's security authorities to examine thoroughly the circumstances' surrounding Golubev's death.Itar-Tass described Golubev as one of the 'key witnesses' on the Yukos scandal. Yukos, once Russia's biggest oil company, collapsed three years ago after being slapped with a massive tax bill. The government seized and sold its assets to raise money to pay off the claims.Khodorkovsky was jailed on charges of embezzlement and tax evasion. He was just one of the Yukos executives facing fraud. Some of them, including Khodorkovsky, are still languishing in prison, while others have fled the country. Golubev was not a target of these government-initiated attacks. The Metropolitan Police has today reaffirmed its earlier findings that Golubev died of 'natural causes' following a post-mortem examination.Golubev's death is treated by the police as 'non-suspicious', said a spokesman, adding: 'The matter is now closed.'monicca.egoy@thomson.commbe/slmCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2006.
