LONDON - Warwick-based laptop manufacturer Rock has become the first company to announce the introduction of the world's first dual-core laptop powered by AMD processor. The product called the Xtreme 64 can also be adopted to work on AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800as well as Dual Core or Athlon 64 FX57 single core processor.
The laptop looks sleek enough with a 17 inch 1920x1200 LCD. US system builder WidowPC has also been in the race to build a similar product called Sting 917X2. In fact Widow has also announced the product. But it has now emerged that Rock has pipped Widow to the post by shipping out this deadly piece of fantastic hardware before Widow managed to do so.
Both companies were looking forward to Christmas shipping, but it appears that Rock was ready to launch its version much before that crucial period. Rock's machine has got NVIDIA 6800 Ultra graphics as well as dual hard drives in addition to dual DVD writers.
However these are optional. "Dual Core notebooks are undoubtedly the future for those who need as much power as they can get even if they sacrifice some portability," commented Mr. Nick Broadman, the managing director of Rock. "Xtreme 64 is causing a great deal of excitement amongst our customers who haven't previously been able to get near to this performance in a portable workstation."
Rock is looking to redefine the laptop market with the product. It is being touted as a "desktop replacement." Putting the company's efforts into perspective, Broadman said, “Rock is a UK specialist manufacturer in the market of manufacturing high quality notebooks."
He added that the company might not be as big as Dell, “But this has been our business for over 14 years and we have built great relationships with suppliers which has enabled us to be the first to bring new technology to the mobile arena." The Xtreme 64 is said to retail for £1,899 excluding VAT.
