If you’re planning to buy a new car, make sure that you haggle (bargain), says researchers, as it will save you on an average £1,578.
What Car? magazine said that if combined all the buyers haggle they can save up to £4 billion a year.
| The magazine also says that this is the right time to bargain as car makers are facing a downturn after making impressive sales records during the last couple of years, basically trigged by fears about the economy and house prices.
Since showroom sales are down by 21 per cent on last year, the dealers are left with no other choice but to cut down prices drastically.
However, What Car? editor David Motton cautions buyers to do their homework on prices before going to a dealership, listen to what is offered, not be intimidated and not be afraid to walk away if sales staff do not offer the deal they want.
At present, Citroen dealerships is offering the biggest discounts to its buyers, whereby they (buyers) can haggle an average of £2,883 off a vehicle. The next is MG Rover where the buyer can easily haggle of £2,597, £2,118 at Renault and £1,345 at Proton.
The magazine said even big brands such as Mercedes-Benz was also offering discounts and the biggest cash saving was £8,223 off on Mercedes S600 limousine.
Regionally speaking, North West offered the best bargains, where buyers could save up to an average £1,740 per vehicle, while dealers in Wales offered the lowest discount £1,322.
