MCLEAN, Va. (AP) - Gannett Co., publisher of USA Today, said Wednesday its June revenue fell 4.3 percent on continued weakness in classified ads and broadcasting.

Pro forma operating revenue for the period ended July 1 slipped to $622.5 million from $650.7 million in the previous year. The company's U.K. operations benefited from an increase in the value of the British pound.

Pro forma assumes all properties currently owned were owned in both periods.

Total advertising sales sagged 6.2 percent to $418.4 million, compared with $446 million a year ago on a 7.4 percent decline in classified ads and a 6.2 percent drop in local advertising.

Broadcasting revenue slid 5.8 percent on fewer political ads. Television revenue fell 7 percent on lower local and national revenue.

Total operating revenue for the second quarter dipped 4 percent to $1.93 billion from $2 billion.

Total ad sales sagged 5.3 percent to $1.28 billion compared with $1.35 billion in the previous year.

Broadcasting revenue fell 6.5 percent, while television revenue dropped 7.1 percent.

Year to date, total revenue is down 2.6 percent, with ad sales down 3.6 percent and broadcasting revenue down 6.4 percent.
