BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - China is on the verge of completing a project launched almost two decades ago to add 35,000 kilometers of trunk roads running the length and breadth of the country, the Ministry of Communications said.According to vice minister Weng Mengyong, the National Trunk Road Plan of Five North-South and Seven East-West Lines (NTRP) will be almost complete by the end of this year.The project cost 900 bln yuan, Weng told reporters.The trunk road system, which China sees as crucial to its social and economic development, particularly in the poorer central and western regions, involves a total of 12 highways connecting major cities, special economic zones, transport hubs and ports.(1 usd = 7.37 yuan)will.davies@afxasia.com-xfnwd/xfjamesaCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
