LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Deutsche Telekom AG's UK mobile arm T-mobile and Hutchison Whampoa's 3 UK mobile service have agreed to share their 3G mobile network in a deal that could save the companies 2 bln stg over 10 years. The agreement will pave the way for national high-speed third-generation mobile coverage by 2009.Although the companies will not share their core network or T-Mobile's 2G network, they will combine their 3G access networks which include the mobile phone masts and infrastructure that connects to each operator's separate core network. The companies will set up a 50:50 joint venture to create the shared network which is scheduled for completion in just over two years.Through capital and operating expenditure savings, T-Mobile and 3 expect to save around 2 bln stg over 10 years.Under the joint venture contract, which runs to the end of 2031, both operators will work as equal partners in planning the development and operation of the integrated access network while remaining competitors in the UK mobile wholesale and retail markets.kathy.sandler@thomson.comks/ejbCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
