HELSINKI (AFX) - Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen's Centre Party looked on course to return to office for a new four year term after advance voting figures in parliamentary elections put it almost 2 pct points ahead of its nearest rival, the Social Democratic Party. The Centre Party recorded 24.8 pct of advance votes counted before 8.00 pm (18.00 GMT), with the Social Democrats, its junior coalition partner, winning 22.9 pct.The opposition conservative National Coalition Party took 21.8 pct.Almost 1.2 mln Finns -- or 30 pct of those eligible to vote -- cast their ballots in advance voting between Mar 7-13.Historically, the advance vote has closely mirrored the final count in Finnish parliamentary elections, observers said.Polling stations closed at 8.00 pm (18.00 GMT) today, while definitive results were expected in by around 10.00 pm (20.00 GMT).Some 4.2 million Finns are entitled to vote for the 200 members of parliament.james.etheridge@thomson.comje/abrCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
