KREUTH, Germany (AFX) - A key coalition ally of German Chancellor Angela Merkel will step down as leader of Bavaria's long-time ruling party and premier of the state, party sources said.Edmund Stoiber has agreed that he will be replaced as leader of the powerful southern state by the current Bavarian interior minister, Guenther Beckstein, party parliamentarians told Agence France-Presse.The current economy minister of the state, Erwin Huber, will take over as chairman of the conservative Christian Social Union (CSU).The CSU is the sister party of Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU).The party has not yet decided when Stoiber will leave office.newsdesk@afxnews.comafp/cmrCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2006.
