CHELMSFORD, Mass. (AFX) - Zoll Medical Corp., which makes resuscitation devices and software, said Thursday it received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration to market its Zoll E Series with Real CPR Help defibrillator to treat cardiac arrest.Zoll said its Real CPR Help technology gives rescuers the ability to instantly see and hear how well they are performing the rate and depth of CPR chest compressions.'Typical professional defibrillators on the market today only provide generic, ancillary support to rescuers when it comes to CPR performance,' said Richard A. Packer, president and CEO of Zoll. 'These devices merely tell rescuers to start CPR at the appropriate moment during a resuscitation attempt. Improving CPR quality is a key to increasing survival rates from cardiac arrest. Given where the science of resuscitation is headed, we believe that this type of instantaneous feedback will be standard care in the next five years.'Sudden cardiac arrest is an abrupt disruption of the heart's function, which causes a lack of blood flow to vital organs, which in turn can result in the loss of blood pressure, pulse, and consciousness. SCA is the leading cause of unexpected death in the world. In the U.S. alone, there are more than 460,000 deaths each year from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. In midday trading on the Nasdaq, Zoll shares slipped $2.68, or 3.8 percent, to $68.82 on the Nasdaq.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
