HOOKER, Okla. (AFX) - The start of construction on a massive beef packing plant has been delayed, but the project is still on track, the company planning the facility said.Smithfield Beef Group and ContiGroup Cos. Inc. announced in October they had formed a partnership to build a 650,000-square-foot beef processing plant near the Texas County town of Hooker and process 5,000 head of cattle per day.Groundbreaking had been planned for this month, but has been delayed.'We are currently still in the engineering, design and bidding process, which is taking longer than expected,' Lyle Orwig, a spokesman for Smithfield Beef Group said.'We are hoping to get the groundbreaking process started sometime within the first quarter of the calendar year.'Smithfield officials examined more than 30 potential sites and met with economic officials in a number of areas before selecting Texas County.There are 600,000 head of cattle on farms within 25 miles of the proposed plant, Orwig said.Information from:Guymon Daily Herald: http://www.guymondailyherald.com.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
