NEW YORK (AFX) - Pfizer Inc., the world's largest drugmaker, said Thursday that European regulators approved the use of the drug Sutent to treat a serious form of kidney cancer.The European Commission approved the sale of Sutent to treat renal cell carcinoma that has spread to other parts of the body or is in its advanced stages.Pfizer submitted a study that followed 750 patients given either Sutent or interferon-alfa, the current standard treatment.Patients given Sutent survived an average of 11 months without disease progression, compared with an average five months in the interferon group. Sutent patients also had a significantly higher response to their treatment, and discontinued the treatment less often because of adverse events.Pfizer shares rose 33 cents to $27.22 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
