WASHINGTON: In a move that is seen as clever marketing strategy, Nintendo announced free access to its WiFi connection at McDonald’s restaurants across the US.
The complimentary access to Nintendo’s WiFi connection will mean McDonald’s customers get to play Nintendo games such as Mario Kart DS and Tony Hawk’s American SK8Land with online partners.
Customers just need to bring their Nintendo DS unit with a Wi-Fi-enabled game to the restaurants and simply launch the game in Nintendo WiFi Connection mode.
The chain’s approx. 6000 restaurants will have WiFi connections supplied by Wayport – a leading provider of wired and wireless high-speed Internet access in public locations. For McDonald’s this has meant one more reason for kids to come to their restaurant; and for Nintendo the restaurants’ customers will help meet a sizeable percentage of its target market.
The Nintendo WiFi connections at the restaurants will bring countless people together creating a single community of gamers in a wireless network. The service is slated for a November 14 launch.
Mario Kart and American SK8Land will be the first online games to be released next month. The company plans to release two more games Animal Crossing: Wild World and Metroid Ptime Hunters, by the yearend.
The company’s future gaming console, scheduled for release next year, would also connect to the WiFi network. The company has so far sold 2.2 million Nintendo DS units in the US since its launch last November.
