The famous toothpaste manufacturer, Colgate, is all set to pull the shutters down its Salford factory, near Manchester in England, which will leave at least 400 people redundant.
The closure of the Salford Colgate factory was scheduled for 2007 and was included in the company’s previous restructuring program. Colgate had announced its cost-cutting regime earlier on and said that it would shut about 78 factories and slash 4,400 jobs, to help the sourcing of products more efficiently and effectively. According to union leaders, Colgate was shifting its production to the eastern part of Europe.
Other sites of the company where job cuts would come into force were Colgate factories in Italy, Poland, Romania and Turkey. However, the site at Guilford, Surrey, would remain unaffected.
| In a statement by the company, Colgate assured its Salford employees that the downsizing was not any indication of their work, calibre or performance. It said, “Employees were also assured that all plans resulting from the announcement would be consistent with the company's values and that the company will provide assistance for those affected. During the coming weeks, the company will begin the process for sharing information and consulting with shop stewards, union officials and the European Works Council regarding the proposed plans for the intended closure.”
Meanwhile, union officials condemned the job cuts and were severely disappointed and abashed at the news. An Amicus official, Paul Reuter, sought an urgent meeting with the company officials, saying, "This is extremely disappointing news and we will be seeking immediate talks."
