Opel car model to be assembled in Serbia |

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) - General Motors Corp. Thursday signed a deal with Zastava Automobili for the Serbian carmaker to start assembling an Opel model starting next year, officials said.Germany-based Opel is part of the GM group. The Opel Astra Classic will be assembled in Zastava's factory in Kragujevac, central Serbia, said Duncan Aldred, a top GM official for central and eastern Europe.Bozidar Djelic, Serbia's deputy prime minister, said the business plan envisages that 10,000 cars be assembled at the Zastava factory by 2010.'This is a huge chance and responsibility for Zastava,' he said.The Zastava is Serbia's only car factory. The troubled company was a Balkan giant before the bloody breakup of the former Yugoslav federation. It produced the boxy Yugo car that was exported to the United States in the late 1980s.Zastava currently assembles a Fiat Punto model under the name of Zastava 10.Aldred also announced that the GM-Zastava deal with lead to lowering of the Opel Astra Classic prices at the Serbian market for about $2,755.
