(updates with more details surrounding the project)HELSINKI (AFX) - The Finnish trade and industry ministry said it has refused several requests from Areva for uranium prospection licences. The applications related to areas judged as promising by the company in the south of Finland and in Lapland in the far north. The ministry, which granted two permits to Areva last October for exploration in the east of Finland, said the new requests 'do not fulfill legal requirements for mining prospection.'Areva's announcement of its plan to explore in other regions stirred a wave of protests from local people and environmental organisations.Areva produced more than 6,000 tonnes of uranium in 2005, around 15 pct of world output. The group is building a nuclear power station in Finland, the only one under construction in Europe and the first of Areva's third-generation EPR European pressurised water reactors to go into construction.Work on the Olkiluoto reactor is 18 months behind schedule and Areva has said the project is expected to take five and a half years to complete instead of the initial four.Andrew.Newby@Thomson.comanCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2006.
