EU says air passengers up 8.5 pct, freight up 3.5 pct in 2005 vs 2004 |

BRUSSELS (AFX) - The European Commission said the total number of air passengers travelling in the bloc rose 8.5 pct to 705.8 mln in 2005, from the previous year.It added that the bloc's air freight was up 3.5 pct to 11.0 mln tonnes, of which 80 pct was through traffic outside the bloc.On passengers, 23 pct travelled on domestic flights, with 42 pct travelling on intra-EU flights and 35 pct on external EU flights.The commission said that the highest number of passengers were registered in the EU's five major markets.UK passengers rose 6.0 pct to 204.0 mln; for Germany the rise was 8.0 pct to 146.0 mln; Spain recorded an 11.0 pct increase to 144.0 mln; France showed a 5.0 pct climb to 108.0 mln; and Italy posted an 8.0 pct rise to 88.0 mln.The busiest airport was London Heathrow, handling 68 mln passengers, up 1 pct year-on-year. For other airports, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Frankfurt posted a 5 pct and 2 pct rise in passengers respectively.On freight, the EU executive said Frankfurt handled the most air freight -- 2.0 mln tonnes, up 7.0 pct on the previous year.
