PARIS (AFX) - Safran is in talks with a European telecom company over a possible partnership for its troubled mobile handset division, a source close to the matter said following a board meeting presided over by the new supervisory board chairman, Francis Mer.

The deal would see Safran building handsets for the company, whose identity was not disclosed, one of the sources said, adding that the talks are 'well advanced.'

It would allow Safran to focus on mid- to high-end equipment, instead of trying to compete with more standard models, where price competition has been steadily increasing.

For Gontran Filet, an analyst with the telecom research institute IDATE, Sony-Ericsson could be a partner for Safran, since its own range of mobile phones, which include music and photo applications, would fit well with Safran's own high-end models.
