BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - The University of Mary is getting a $1.5 million gift from Kirk Lanterman, the former chief executive officer of Holland American Line, and his wife, Janet. The gift will go to the university's Tharaldson School of business, through an endowment fund that provides scholarships to honors students. The Lantermans joined Sister Thomas Welder, the University of Mary president, in announcing the gift Monday.'It's our belief that the Tharaldson School's emphasis on strong academics, practical skills, and ethics will not only position its graduates for success, but will impact businesses throughout North Dakota and the nation by carrying forth and recreating the concept of servant-leadership,' Lanterman said in a statement issued by the school.Lanterman, a 1950 graduate of Bismarck High School, spent most of his career in the cruise industry. He received an honorary doctorate from Mary in 2005.Welder said the Lantermans have 'profoundly affected and enriched countless lives through their example of service, generosity, and moral leadership.'Construction has begun on the Tharaldson school, with completion of the main building scheduled for fall 2008. University officials said the Lanterman gift completes two of the three fundraising phases and the university is starting a community campaign to raise the remaining $1 million.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
