ZURICH (Thomson Financial) - Roche Holdings AG continues to screen the market for genomic research tools companies, although no deal is currently in the pipeline, a Roche spokeswoman told Thomson Financial News following the 272.5 mln usd acquisition of US company NimbleGen Systems.'Genomic research tools are key for the future of any major pharma group,' the spokeswoman said.'These tools help our understanding of genetic causes of disease and predisposition factors, and also help in identifying potential drug targets and thus offer a great potential for pipeline development,' she said.Roche said that with most large pharma groups on the look-out for top-end genomic research technologies, it was willing to pay a 'considerable price' for NimbleGen.However, the group does not expect large bidding wars to erupt over such companies in the near future, the spokeswoman said.Today's acquisition of NimbleGen -- a company active in high-density DNA microarrays -- was the latest in a series of genomic research tools deals that saw Roche acquire 454 Life Sciences, BioVeris and GuraGen this year, before its latest deal today.johanna.treeck@thomson.comjmt/cm2COPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
