LONDON: Mobile phones software maker Symbian yesterday said shipments of its operating system had tripled during the second quarter of 2005. The British-based software maker’s worldwide installed base has now crossed the 39 million mark.
In the quarter ending 30 June 2005 the company’s O/S was installed in 7.8 million mobile phones which is nearly three times 2004’s full year shipment of 2.6 million. In the previous quarter, shipment had risen to 6.75 million. The total half year’s shipment of 14.5 million units was also 191 percent more up from previous year’s numbers and has nearly doubled the company’s first half revenues.
Royalty from its shipments had also doubled t £41.6 million during the first half years. The company’s chief executive Nigel Crawford said the 191 percent increase was evidence of not only a rapidly growing global demand but also of Symbian’s continued leadership of this market.
Full year performance is also expected to be positive as new Symbian O/S-based mobile phones slated for launch during the next six months, would greatly influence demand, according to a statement issued by the company. The company hoped to ship 30 million units by the year end.
The mobile phones O/S maker enjoys a 50 percent share of the smartphones market and competes with Microsoft. The software giant’s Windows is shipped with Smartphones and Palm products. The O/S of both Symbian and Microsoft enable computer-like applications like navigation, email, video, music, etc.
Symbian’s second quarter performance appears to be in line with analysts forecast. Chief executive Clifford said that although Symbian’s first half performance was impressive, the company has yet to hit higher volumes in mid-range, low-priced handsets. He said his company would continue focusing on this segment of the mobiles phone market.
The company was set up as a joint venture between UK-based portable computer pioneer Psion and many leading mobile phone manufacturers like Samsung Corp., Sony Ericsson, Panasonic and Nokia – currently its largest shareholder. Psion withdrew from the partnership last year.
