PARIS (Thomson Financial) - Alcatel-Lucent is to meet French union representatives on September 3 and 5 in order to reach an agreement on the implementation of 1,458 job cuts planned as part of a group-wide restructuring, union sources told Agence France-Presse.Marc Marandon of the CGT union suggested that the two sides were close to a deal, saying he hoped the talks at the beginning of September would resolve 'the last-remaining stumbling blocks'.Any agreement reached will then be put before a September 12 meeting of Alcatel-Lucent's French works council.Since the job cuts were announced in February, the French unions have succeeded in getting the company to agree to extend the implementation period by six months to the end of June 2009, as well as the creation of 473 new jobs in promising activities.Confirming a report in Les Echos, Alcatel-Lucent told Agence France-Presse that French president Nicolas Sarkozy and prime minister Francois Fillon have each held meetings with CEO Patricia Russo and chairman Serge Tchuruk during the summer, with discussions focusing on the telecoms business.tfn.paris@thomson.comgt/rwCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
