Barr Labs initiates challenge of patents for Focalin XR tablets |

NEW YORK (Thomson Financial) - Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. Tuesday said it has initiated a challenge of the patents listed for Novartis AG's drug Focalin XR extended-release capsules in doses of 5mg, 10mg, 15mg and 20mg.Focalin XR is indicated for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in patients aged six years and older.Barr filed an abbreviated new drug application with the Food and Drug Administration to market a generic version of Focalin XR in June 2007. The application was accepted in October and Elan Holdings Inc., which manufactures Focalin for Novartis in the U.S., filed suit against Barr on Nov. 16 to prevent Barr from marketing the generic product.The suit formally initiated the patent challenge, Barr said.Shares of Barr rose 1.3% to $51.60.
