SYDNEY (XFN-ASIA) - ChevronTexaco Corp's Australian unit Chevron Australia Pty Ltd has been awarded the rights to explore a part of the Greater Gorgon area off the northwest coast, ChevronTexaco said.It said Chevron Australia would be the operator of the W06-12 permit area, covering 3,000 square kilometers, and would hold a 50 pct interest. The Australian units of Exxon Mobil Corp and the Royal Dutch Shell group will each have a 25 pct interest.The block is 60km offshore in the Carnarvon Basin, in which the North West Shelf natural gas field and the yet-to-be-developed Gorgon gas field lie.A three-year program of work for the permit area includes geotechnical studies, two-dimensional seismic reprocessing, three-dimenstional seismic survey acquisition and the drilling of an exploration well.bruce.hextall@xfn.com
