TAIPEI (XFN-ASIA) - Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (2330.TW) has won approval to upgrade the technology it uses at its 8-inch-wafer plant in Shanghai to 0.18 micron from 0.25 micron, the Investment Commission said.Micron is used to measure spaces between transistors on a chip; the smaller the spaces, the more transistors can be packed on a chip. One micron, or micrometer, equals one millionth of a meter.Separately, the commission said it approved nine China-bound investment applications for a combined 252.50 mln usd earlier in the day.The commission also approved one inbound investment application by foreigners for 92.51 mln usd, it said in a statement.Approval was granted to another non-China outbound investment application for 76.46 mln usd, it added.Of the China-bound applications, Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corp (1326.TW) was approved to inject 57 mln usd into a Ningbo subsidiary in Zhejiang province.Asustek Computer Inc (2357.TW) won approval to inject 50 mln usd into a Shanghai subsidiary and 20 mln usd into a Suzhou unit, it said.Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp (3009.TW) was approved to invest another 30 mln usd in its Ningbo operation that deals in the assembly of LCD monitor modules, it added.Between Feb 12 and March 9, the commission approved a total of 162 China-bound investment applications for a combined 289.21 mln usd.It also received 28 registrations of small-size China-bound investment projects with a value below 200,000 usd each, totaling a combined 2.56 mln usd.During the same period, the commission approved 130 inbound investment applications for 118.60 mln usd and 43 non-China outbound applications for 153.33 mln usd, it said.philip.wang@afxasia.compw/km
