Ashland sales rise in January |

NEW YORK (AP) - Chemical company Ashland Inc. said Tuesday sales from its core distribution unit rose 2 percent in January to $340 million from $335 million during the same period a year ago.The distribution unit sells chemicals, plastic, composite materials and environmental services in North America and thermoplastics in Europe.The Covington, Ky.-based company said in a regulatory filing that revenue from its performance materials division, which makes specialty chemicals for various industries, increased 21 percent to $133.3 million from $110.4 million a year ago. Revenue from its water technologies division, which provides water treatment services, more than doubled in the month to $66.8 million from $32.6 million.Revenue from its Valvoline lubricants unit grew 9 percent to $122.8 million from $113.1 million.Shares of Ashland rose 65 cents to close at $68.62 on the New York Stock Exchange.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
