TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - Japan and China are planning to increase their military exchanges as bilateral relations continue to warm, the Nikkei newspaper said Sunday without citing sources. The expanded exchange program will see naval vessels making reciprocal visits to Chinese and Japanese ports, the report said. The port calls were agreed to in 2000, but the plan has been in diplomatic limbo since then due to the repeated visits by former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to a Tokyo war shrine, which angered China. The Japanese government considers the port visits to be an important first step toward improving ties with China, the Nikkei said. The Chinese navy will likely first visit a Japanese port in August, followed by a return visit by a Japanese ship next year, it added.afp
