WASHINGTON (AP) - Government regulators approved an electronic pill despenser Thursday designed to help patients keep track of their prescription medications.The device from INRange Systems stores and releases a patients' pills at a specified time. The so-called Electronic Medication Management Assistant also includes software that allows physicians to electronically manage the prescriptions via computer.Officials from the Food and Drug Administration said the device could help prevent patients from taking the wrong pills or the incorrect dosage.'It will help take away some of the confusion patients can experience when taking prescription medications, and allow care providers to more closely monitor their patients' medications between office visits,' said Daniel Schultz, director of FDA device center.The Institute of Medicine estimated that 1.5 million people in the U.S. suffered from medication errors last year.Privately-held INRange Systems Inc. is based in Altoona, Penn.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
