LOS ANGELES: "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", J.K. Rowling's fourth in the series on the schoolboy wizard, made 105 million pounds in three days at cinemas in 21 countries. The movie cost its makers about 87 million pounds to make.
In Britain, the movie collected 14.3 million pounds, creating an all-time weekend box office record. In Denmark, the collections were 1.5 million pounds, in Sweden, 1.4 million pounds and in Norway 1.2 million pounds.
The first movie in the series, "Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone" had collections of 9.6 million pounds on its first weekend; the second, "Harry Potter And The Chamber of Secrets", made 10.3 million pounds, and the third, "Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban", grossed 9.5 million pounds.
In the United States, the movie had its fans hooked with weekend collections at 59 million pounds, just short of three movies so far -- Spider-Man, the final Star Wars film, Revenge of the Sith, and Shrek 2.
The Goblet of Fire had an advantage as there were no appealing films for months together, except for James Bond, Rocky and Star Trek.
In Britain, the film is rated 12A, meaning that under-12s have to be accompanied by adults because of its "moderate fantasy violence, threat and horror". In the U.S. parents were warned that some scenes might be unsuitable for under-13s.
The movie was the first in the series to be directed by an Englishman, Mike Newell, 63, who made Four Weddings and a Funeral.
The film goes on show in Japan, Italy and Spain next weekend, while movie buffs in Australia and France will get to see it in the first week of December.
Dan Radcliffe, 16, the actor who plays Harry, has made 10 million pounds from the first three films, with another 5 million pounds in additional earnings. He has been offered 8 million pounds for the next in the series, "The Order of the Phoenix".
