Maddona reigns again with double chart glory

LONDON: Pop diva Madonna has proved once again why she is considered the queen of the UK charts. Twenty years after her first single ‘Like a Virgin’ rocked the nation at No. 1 on the singles chart, the singer added many milestones along the way topping it this time with a double glory – the 11th No.1 single and the 9th No.1 album.

The latest survey of the top UK charts found her album ‘Confession on a Dance Floor’ come up at number 1 and the single ‘Hung Up’ topping the singles chart for the second week.

The news may come as some relief for the singer and her recording companies who were last week ordered by a court to withdraw her single ‘Frozen’ from Madonna’s previous album ‘Ray of Light’. The singer lost a plagiarism lawsuit by a Belgian songwriter who said the song used four bars of his song ‘Ma Vie Fout L’camp’. ‘Ray of Light’ was a significant achievement for Madonna as it won four US Grammies including the Best Pop Album.

Yesterday’s top-of-the-UK-charts rating might help the singer and her associates forget the ignominy for a while and celebrate her new success.

Behind Madonna’s ‘Hung Up’ on the UK singles charts are ‘You raise me up’ by Irish crooners Westlife at No.2 and ‘My Humps’ by Black Eyed Peas at No.3. ‘Hung Up’ also topped the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles.

On the albums list, ‘Confessions’ was followed by ‘Never Forget – The Ultimate Collection’ by Take That at No. 2. This list had some new names among the top ten – ‘Biology’ by the band Girls Aloud at number 4; ‘Switch It On’ by Will Young at No. 5; ‘A Night to Remember’ by Liberty X at No.6.

‘The White Stripes’ continued to show their influence on music with the unique ‘The Denial Twist’ – a single from their album ‘Get Behind Me Satan’ at a modest No.10 on the singles chart.
