The next 'revolution,' coming soon to a mobile phone near you in the mobile telephony sector is the addition of 'Live television' on the handsets. After digital cameras, video recording, it is present age of “mobile viewing”, and that too, not one, but nine channels, entailing news from ITN and CNN, a fashion channel, an extreme sports channel and the Cartoon network.
More to be added in near future, Channel 4 will provide live streaming from the Big Brother house 24 hours a day and ITV will arouse interests in its waning reality show, Celebrity Love Island.
Orange, being the provider of such an incredible service will operate on the 3G network, and offer the subscribers (with Nokia 6680 handsets - as it is mandatory to avail this services only on this handset), a monthly fee of £10 over the normal bill.
| “This is truly a service where 3G comes into its own. We don't expect people to watch for hours at a time but to dip in and out," said Julian Diment, head of commercial and brand partnerships at Orange.
The first UK provider to announce such service has increased the pace of its competitors and in their venture, Vodafone is likely to announce a rival service shortly. To join the bandwagon is also O2, who is testing a different technology based on digital TV signals in Oxford.
It is estimated that almost three hundred and fifty people will be involved in the O2 trial, where content will be generated from the Cartoon Network, CNN and the Discovery Channel.
To understand customer response to the new concept of mobile TV, it is essential to constantly gauze and monitor the usage services. It is quite likely that this feature can become an integral money-churner for the mobile firms, who obviously intent to make profits, after paying exorbitant sums for 3G licenses.
