Media reports elucidating BT’s plan to launch iPod with the new mobile services was mistaken. But what they have in store is BT Livetime.
The pilot mobile TV project, “BT Livetime“, has already been kick started with the telecom giant roping almost 1000 Virgin mobile customers. This arrangement will provide assess to live digital TV to the Virgin Mobile phone owners, enabling them to watch selective satellite channels and listen to over 50 DAB digital radio channels.
Trial customers can use a programme guide to what’s running and set alerts to receive reminders at the start of the programme.
| The company has lucidly stated, "BT Livetime is not designed to compete with Apple’s iPod which is based on a different technology and is a totally different business model." They also added that capturing live TV would be difficult. Hence there will be "no recording functionality on the devices”. Besides, music tracks can also not be downloaded.
Having said the above, the possibility of the conglomerate to foray the multi- billion-music download market is not ruled out and the leaders of the telecom industry are working on a phase 2 commercial services for music download along with subscription services.
But there seems to be lot of complexities of IF’s and But’s. There are factors galore such as license agreements with content owners, battery consumption, DRM (Digital Rights Management) technology along with available storage, which will define the service capabilities.
There's a lot of things that need to be ironed out," a spokesperson told Silicon. Also since it's a broadcast service, it's only going to make sense to distribute the most popular tracks such as top 10s," was told to BBC.
The company promises keep the viewers and the listeners posted on the developments so keep watching and listening!
