LONDON: Spamalot, the hit Broadway musical based on the movie "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," is to make its London foray in October. Previews will open 2 October at West End's Palace Theatre, the programme's producers said Friday.
The Palace Theatre is currently staging Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Woman in White," which closes 25 February after a 19-month successful run. The show, adapted from the Wilkie Collins novel, will begin a year-long national tour in January 2007.
Tickets for Spamalot will be available from 21 February.
Spamalot has been a huge Broadway hit. It has broken box office records and got back the $12 million investment in less than seven months after its launch in March last year. It has won three Tony awards, including the eighth Tony for director Mike Nichols. Written by former Python star Eric Idle, it features a chorus line of dancing divas and knights in the story of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table and their quest for the Holy Grail. At Broadway, its cast included Tim Curry as King Arthur, Hank Azaria as Lancelot and Frasier star David Hyde Pierce as Sir Robin. The casting for the London production is yet to be finalised.
The producers expect it to be a great draw in London like another recent Broadway hit, Mel Brooks' The Producers.
