YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. (AP) - IBM Corp. said Monday it teamed with Taiwan's MediaTek Inc. to develop ultra-fast chipsets that can wirelessly transmit a full-length high definition movie to and from a home PC, hand-held device, retail kiosk or television set.IBM said the new technology eliminates the need for connecting wires between HD-TVs and set-top boxes, and allows for more convenient placement of devices in consumers' homes. The companies plans to combine their work on millimeter wave (mmWave) radio technology -- the highest frequency portion of the radio spectrum through which large amounts of information can be sent quickly -- and digital chipsets to create multimedia wireless products.IBM said the large bandwidth for data transmission available at the mmWave frequency band enables data rates at least 100 times faster than current Wi-Fi standards. For example, a 10-gigabyte file could be uploaded in 5 seconds with the new technology versus 10 minutes using current Wi-Fi technology.Copyright 2007 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
