KENILWORTH, N.J. (AP) - Drug developer Schering-Plough Corp. said Monday it started dosing vascular disease patients with its stroke drug candidate in a late-stage study. The thrombin receptor antagonist is an antiplatelet drug aimed at keeping platelets from sticking together. Aspirin is a common antiplatelet medicine. The Phase III clinical program is expected to involve 30,000 patients with vascular disease. The first study will involve about 19,500 patients who have previously had a stroke. The company said patients undergoing angioplasty and treated with the drug in an already completed Phase II clinical trial had a lower number of strokes. The Phase II study was not designed to establish the drug's effectiveness. The company also said midstage study results showed the drug candidate did not increase a patients' risk of bleeding. Those results confirm safety results seen in previous studies, the company said.Shares of Schering-Plough rose 86 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $33.57 in premarket trading.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
