TAIPEI (XFN-ASIA) - (Updating to add eligible workforce, labor participation)Taiwan's unemployment rate was 3.92 pct in October, down from 3.99 pct in September but up from 3.90 pct in October of 2006, the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) said.Average unemployment in the first 10 months of the year stood at a seven-year low of 3.92 pct, unchanged from a year earlier.On a seasonally adjusted basis, the October unemployment rate was 3.89 pct, unchanged from the previous month but up from 3.83 pct a year earlier.The DGBAS said 421,000 people were jobless in October, 8,000 fewer than the month before.A major factor in the decline was a reduction of 16,000 in the number of fresh graduates who failed to find jobs.There were increases of 3,000 both in the number of of those who quit because of dissatisfaction with their jobs and in the number of those who lost their jobs due to business closures or staff cutbacks.On a year-on-year basis, the total number of jobless people in October rose by 8,000.The DGBAS said the eligible workforce was 10.74 mln in October, up by 0.02 pct from the month before and up by 1.38 pct from a year earlier.The October labor participation ratio was 58.19 pct, down from 58.24 pct in the previous month but up from 58.11 pct a year earlier.In the first 10 months of the year, the labor participation ratio averaged 58.24 pct, rising from 57.87 pct a year earlier to a new 10-year high, the directorate said.adela.lin@afxasia.comPlease write your own byline and save in your preferencesxfnal/xfjamesaCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
