YARDLEY, Penn. (AP) - Newspaper publisher Journal Register Co. said Thursday that its January revenue fell 4.6 percent on lower retail and classified advertising.Total revenue from continuing operations for the five-week period ending Feb. 4 dropped to $40.7 million from $42.7 million.Excluding results from the Michigan cluster, revenue for the month dipped 3.2 percent.Total advertising revenue declined 6.8 percent to $30.2 million from $32.4 million. Excluding the Michigan cluster, ad sales dropped 4.9 percent.National advertising revenue tumbled 33.5 percent to $1.2 million on softness in telecommunications ad revenue.The segment represents less than 5 percent of total ad sales, the company said.Retail advertising revenue fell 4.1 percent, or 3.2 percent excluding the Michigan cluster.Journal Register said weakness in department stores and financial/insurance ad sales were partially offset by strong medical/healthcare and services ad sales.Classified advertising revenue slipped 6.4 percent. Excluding the Michigan cluster the ad sales were down 2.8 percent. Real estate declined 3.5 percent, but were up 0.5 percent excluding Michigan's results. Auto advertising slid 29.7 percent, hurt by the inclusion of the week between Christmas and New Year's and last year's Super Bowl revenue.Online ad sales jumped 26 percent to $1.4 million.Circulation revenue edged up 0.6 percent to $8.8 million.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
