DANVILLE, Va. (AP) - Matrix Technologies Inc. of North Carolina plans to invest about $20 million and employ up to 500 at a Pittsylvania County center using green technology to manufacture a concrete replacement and produce energy to run specialized greenhouses. The concrete substitute is a compound made from cement and a biomass material such as soybean hulls, cornstalks or newspapers, Matrix president Jim Ladd said Thursday. The material won't crack and can be used to produce considerably cheaper housing, he said.Matrix also will convert waste that is difficult to dispose of such as old tires and medical materials into electricity to run greenhouses on the 100-acre site. The company plans to produce plants used in the European pharmaceutical industry, he said.'We are looking to employ people who used to work in the textile and tobacco industry here,' Ladd said. 'We think we have a major vehicle for putting people back to work in the southeastern United States.'The Pittsylvania operation will be the Durham, N.C., company's first, but Ladd said two or three others may be announced within the next few months.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
