SAN DIEGO (AP) - Drug maker Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. said Monday a late-stage clinical study showed that its Abilify anti-psychotic drug helped improve symptoms of depression in those patients where antidepressants alone fell short. The study followed 362 patients who had been screened to determine they were having an inadequate response to antidepressant drugs. Patients continued their antidepressant therapy and were randomly assigned Abilify or a placebo for six weeks. The New York-based company presented its data at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association. On a scale of zero to 60 -- with 60 representing the most severe symptoms -- patients taking Abilify saw an average 8.8 point reduction in their scores, a significant improvement compared with the 5.8 point reduction in the placebo group, the company said.Bristol-Myers licenses Abilify from Japanese drug maker Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co. Otsuka discovered the drug, and Bristol-Myers gained U.S. approval to market the drug to treat schizophrenia in 2002.Shares of Bristol-Myers Squibb fell 14 cents to $30.31 Monday.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
