TAIPEI (XFN-ASIA) - Chunghwa Telecom Co Ltd (2412.TW) said it has signed a letter of intent with Microsoft Corp to form a strategic alliance to expand their various services and gain exposure to small and medium-sized businesses in mainland China.Chunghwa Telecom chairman Ho-Chen Tan and Microsoft chairman Bill Gates signed the letter of intent at the latter's Seattle headquarters earlier this week..Through its alliance with Microsoft, Chunghwa Telecom hopes to add more value to its telecom and internet services, including internet protocol television (IPTV), voice-over-internet-protocol (VoIP), and other multimedia services, Chunghwa Telecom's Chen said.The company also hopes to extend it to Taiwan businesses operating throughout the greater China region, Chen added.Microsoft, meanwhile, said it would continue to provide its platforms and tools to Chunghwa Telecom so that it can facilitate its development of new-generation operations systems and software.Separately, the two companies said they are ready to join forces in charitable activities designed to make available information and communications-related services to Taiwan's rural areas and less fortunate members of society.In today's trade, Chunghwa Telecom closed up 0.10 twd at 63.00.(1 usd = 33.40 twd)philip.wang@afxasia.compw/kmq
